CityMove was proudly represented at the Urban Transitions 2024 conference, held on 5 November 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. The event brought together over 800 participants from diverse disciplines to discuss and promote healthier, more liveable urban environments. Among these attendees, our junior researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Antwerp each presented a poster on their recent work, covering a scoping review on “healthy placemaking” and the routine data mapping of CityMove cities.
The poster presentations were a highlight, attracting the interest of approximately 100 participants who engaged in discussions about the project’s methodology and findings.
One poster showcased preliminary results from mapping routine-data indicators across CityMove’s six partner cities. By aligning these indicators with the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA) domains, the research highlighted how routine data can inform urban actions to promote physical activity and reduce non-communicable diseases. Using a machine learning classifier, the team systematically analysed thousands of variables, identifying key indicators relevant to each city’s unique context.
The poster on the scoping review on healthy placemaking, also presented at the conference, synthesised 42 publications primarily from this decade and the Global North. It revealed that healthy placemaking initiatives often aim to address multiple goals, such as health equity, social cohesion, and general well-being, while involving multiple stakeholders, such as local communities, urban planners, and healthcare providers. Despite these promising efforts, the findings emphasised the need for a more structured framework to guide healthy placemaking initiatives.
CityMove’s participation at Urban Transitions underscored the project’s commitment to advancing research and actions that support active and healthier urban environments. The enthusiastic response from attendees reaffirmed the importance of integrating research, stakeholder collaboration, and technology to address urban health challenges.
We invite you to explore the posters below and learn more about the work that CityMove is conducting. Stay tuned as we continue delivering impactful research and results throughout the year, contributing to the creation of healthier, more inclusive cities for all.
